Celebrate Adopt a Shelter Pet Day!

April 30th is Adopt a Shelter Pet Day!

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates that over 6 million companion animals are brought to shelters each year. In 2024, many of these shelters are near or at capacity, even in Rhode Island. Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is an occasion to remind us of the plight of these animals, but also allows us the chance to celebrate our adopted pets and to give back to those still waiting for homes.

Want to help?

Adopt

When shelters reach capacity, there is no space left for homeless pets. Bringing home a shelter pet lets you save two lives! So why not bring home a companion animal today and make it a true Adopt a Shelter Pet Day?

Foster

Fostering a pet lets you make a difference without needing to make a permanent commitment. With limited space available at shelters, opening your home to a pet in need can be lifesaving. Many groups cover the cost of supplies and veterinary care, too. All you need is an available room, some free time, and a big heart.

Volunteer

Volunteering at your local animal shelter is a wonderful way to make a contribution! There are always roles to fill, whether walking dogs, socializing pets, answering emails, taking pictures, or planning fundraisers. No matter what your skill set or how much time you have, offering your help will be a fulfilling experience for you as well as the pets.

Rhode Island Pet Network is always looking for volunteers! Send us an email if you’d like more information about supporting our mission.

Spay/Neuter

Spaying and neutering pets is vital in reducing overpopulation and the burden on shelters. If you're a pet owner, you can make arrangements to spay and neuter all of your pets. If you're aware of a neighborhood with community cats, consider working with a group that manages TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) to have them spayed or neutered. Spaying and neutering not only helps to control the pet population, but also prevents health problems that can develop in animals that haven’t been fixed. Rhode Island has several low-cost options available for guardians in financial need.

Donate

Every shelter and rescue needs support, and donations are always welcome. Whether they are in need of supplies, monetary donations, or both, your act of kindness will make a difference. Visit your favorite organization's website and social media or stop by during visiting hours to donate. Your contribution can help ensure that these shelters can continue their mission of saving and caring for animals.

Donations are vital to our mission to benefit local shelter animals and are always appreciated, too!

Spread the Word

Looking for an easy way to help? Show the world your adopted pets! Help end the stigma about shelter animals by sharing your success stories. Post pictures and stories on social media today using the hashtag #AdoptaShelterPetDay. Your posts just might inspire others to adopt, foster, donate, or volunteer!
