RI Celebrates Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month
With an estimated 5,000 adoptable dogs in shelters and rescues across Rhode Island, there are plenty of pups ready to make your acquaintance. Help reduce shelter overcrowding, give a deserving dog a family, and gain a loyal companion by bringing home a dog this month.
Celebrate the special occasion and explore our dozens of local organizations working with rescue dogs!

You don’t have to wait for big events to make a new friend. Find listings of most local adoptables on Petfinder.com and Adoptapet.com, which allow searches by location, breed, age, color, and more. Even if you don’t know what you’re looking for yet, stopping by a shelter’s open adoption hours could give you a better idea of who is waiting for you.
Explore Adoption Events
In addition to on-site shelters, several foster-based rescues hold weekend adoption events and special gatherings for their adoptable dogs. Be sure to visit our Facebook page to see upcoming events around Rhode Island! We’re also just a few weeks away from the November 1st “Super Dog Adoption Day” by Always Adopt, which brings together dozens of rescues and hundreds of dogs in one location. Attending any of these adoption events isn’t just for meeting pups – you’ll be put in touch with volunteers and staff who can answer questions and provide you with additional information.
Consider Fostering
If adoption doesn’t fit your lifestyle right now, fostering is a wonderful way to save shelter dogs. Give a dog a temporary place to stay and help the shelter free up space for incoming pups. Many organizations cover the cost of food and veterinary care. There is a consistent shortage of reliable foster homes, and our local rescue groups would be thrilled to have you on their team!
Raise Awareness
If you’re not in a position to adopt or foster right now, you can still help:
Use social media: share posts from local shelters/rescues and use hashtags like #AdoptAShelterDogMonth
Host your own: start a fundraiser or donation drive for commonly used items at shelters like food, toys, and blankets
Talk to friends and family about adoption: sometimes a simple conversation motivates someone to make that important commitment!
Spread your success stories: update the group where your own dog was adopted with pictures of your success. Not only will you cheer up those hard-working volunteers and staff when they see your happy pup, you’ll also give them a great story to encourage new adopters!
Whether you choose to adopt, foster, volunteer, donate, or simply spread the word this October, your participation matters. Thanks for celebrating Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month with your fellow Rhode Islanders!
